The story behind the RK Threads Win95 collection
The Win95 hoodie wasn't supposed to be the cult favourite. We made it because we missed the look of mid-90s desktop chrome and figured a handful of people would too. Three years later it's the most-reordered piece in the RK Designs collection and the line has grown into its own little corner of the studio.
Where it came from
The original Windows 95 Login Hoodie started as a one-off for a friend who works in tech and never stopped talking about how perfect the old Windows UI was: the chunky 3D buttons, the off-white grey, the system fonts that looked like they'd been printed from a dot matrix. We embroidered the login screen onto a box-fit hoodie, posted a photo, and the inbox filled up.
The Solitaire piece followed. Then the MS Paint hoodie, with the actual MS Paint customiser embedded on the product page so people could draw their own art and have it stitched. Then the Win95 Login Customiser, where you can put your own name on the login screen.
Why it stays in rotation
Most of our RK Designs are pop culture pieces that come and go. Simpsons drops, slang tees, jokes that hit their moment and then quietly retire. The Win95 line is the opposite: it sells steadily all year, with a noticeable spike whenever a Windows nostalgia post goes viral on TikTok. The buyers are mostly chronically online people in their late 20s and early 30s who recognise the chrome on instinct.
It's also one of the few RK Designs you can customise without it being Make-Your-Own. The MS Paint hoodie lets you draw on a Win95-style canvas with the original 7-colour palette and have your drawing stitched onto the hoodie. The Login Hoodie lets you enter your own name. Both are genuinely fun to use; not many e-comm storefronts let you doodle in MS Paint and then wear the doodle.
The Solitaire one is our favourite
The mid-game Solitaire screenshot embroidery on the back of the hoodie has the most thread of any piece we make. Each card pattern, each cascade, every stack. It costs us more to produce than the others in the line, and it sells the slowest, and we keep making it anyway because every single time someone wears it to a coffee shop a stranger asks where they got it.
The next ones
We don't pre-announce drops because the lead time on embroidery sampling is unpredictable, but the Win95 line is roughly halfway through what we'd planned for it. Follow @rk.threads on Instagram if you want to be the first to know when the next piece lands. Or just check back here every few weeks.
And if you want to see what's currently available, browse RK Designs; the Win95 pieces are usually near the top.
