Embroidery Digitisation at RK Threads: What You’re Really Paying For
If you’ve ever ordered custom embroidery, you’ve probably come across the term digitisation - and maybe wondered what it actually means, and why there’s a setup cost involved.
At RK Threads, we like to keep things transparent. So here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the embroidery digitisation process, why we charge a $30 fee, and how this differs from the hand-drawn artwork we create for our pet portrait tees.
What is Embroidery Digitisation?
Embroidery machines don’t “understand” images the way a printer does. You can’t just upload a JPG or PNG and hit go.
Digitisation is the process of converting your design into a specialised stitch file that tells the embroidery machine exactly what to do -where to stitch, which direction to move, when to change colours, and how dense each section should be.
It’s not automatic. It’s a skilled process that requires both technical knowledge and an artistic eye.
Our Digitisation Process (Start to Finish)
1. Reviewing Your Design
We start by assessing the artwork you’ve provided. Not all designs translate well into embroidery, so we look at things like detail level, line thickness, and colour complexity.
If needed, we’ll make recommendations to ensure the final result stitches cleanly and looks great on fabric.
2. Planning the Stitch Path
This is where the real work begins. We map out how the design will be stitched -deciding the order of elements, stitch types (satin, fill, run stitches), and how the machine will move from one section to another.
A well-planned stitch path avoids unnecessary trims, reduces thread breaks, and ensures a smooth, professional finish.
3. Adjusting for Fabric and Garment Type
Different fabrics behave differently. A design for a cotton tee won’t be digitised the same way as one for a hoodie or cap.
We adjust stitch density, underlay, and pull compensation so your design holds its shape and doesn’t pucker or distort.
4. Assigning Colours and Layers
Each colour in your design is programmed into the file as a separate layer. We also consider how colours interact -for example, whether lighter threads need a base layer to stand out properly.
5. Testing and Refining
Before we run your order, we test the file to make sure everything stitches correctly. If anything looks off - spacing, alignment, tension - we refine the file until it’s spot on.
Why There’s a $30 Digitisation Fee
Digitisation is a one-time setup process that takes time, skill, and experience.
The $30 fee covers:
- Manual conversion of your artwork into a stitch file
- Technical adjustments for fabric and durability
- Testing and refinement to ensure a clean result
Once your design is digitised, we keep it on file - so you won’t need to pay the fee again for repeat orders using the same design.
Not AI - Real Artists Behind Our Pet Tees
We also want to highlight something important when it comes to our custom pet portrait tees.
Those designs are not generated by AI.
Each pet illustration is created by a real artist who carefully studies your photo and produces a custom drawing from scratch. That means:
- Attention to your pet’s unique features and personality
- Thoughtful line work that translates well to print or embroidery
- A human touch you simply don’t get from automated tools
It’s a slower process, but the end result is far more meaningful and personal.
From Idea to Finished Product
When you order from RK Threads, here’s what the full journey looks like:
- You send us your design or idea

- We package and send it out to you
Every step is handled with attention to detail to ensure you receive something you’re proud to wear.
Final Thoughts
Embroidery might look simple on the surface, but there’s a lot happening behind the scenes to get that clean, professional finish.
The $30 digitisation fee isn’t just a charge - it’s an investment in quality, ensuring your design is translated properly into thread and fabric.
And when it comes to our pet portraits, you’re not getting a quick computer-generated image - you’re getting real artwork, created by a real person, just for you.
If you’ve got a design in mind or want to bring your pet to life on a tee, we’d love to help.
